Present information about the UK film industry.

What is a UK film and how are they different?

Most people would say a UK film would include certain things such as
  • A Setting in the UK
  • British people abroad
  • British author
  • Storyline about a british person
  • Britsh scriptwriter, producer or director.

Under the films act in 1985 it defines that for a film to be shown as a British film it has to meet a number of tests.

  1. It has to be made by a company registered as a UK film company
  2. 70% of the spendings must be spent in the UK
  3. The labour cost between 70-75% has to be spent on european actors
  4. no more than 10% of previously made footage can be shown.

The UK film industry is very different from one such an the American film industry. This is because our culture is very different from theres so our humour and way of life will be considered strange in comparison to theres. Some well known UK films include according to (www.ocr.org.uk)

Bend it like Beckham
Director: Gurinder Chadha, 2002, UK.

Brief Encounter

Chariots of Fire

Howards End

A UK film is considered an English film as it is directed and written by an English team, this means that the people and places featured in the film will naturally be English as well. In the following clip you can see the film Bend It Like Beckham being shown. Keira Knightly is featured in this film and she plays a teenage girl obsessed by football and David Beckham. Keira is 27 years old, comes from London and is a world wide famous actress. She has also been shown in Pirates Of The Caribbean.

This video clip shows all the films that Keira Knightly has been in. She has featured English and big star American films. She has been nominated for awards such as the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award. Both her parents were in the theatre and writing industry and so for her to want to go into acting it could be considered an easy thing to do. This is because she already has contacts and people help her get to where she wants to be. She got her first agent at the age of six and started off doing commercials and other small TV roles.
Her life has been watched and recorder by the media including her personal and private life.

The director of Bend It Like Beckham is Gurinder Chadha. Chadha is a female English director most famous for her shows such as Angus Thongs And Perfect Snogging and Bhaji on the beach. Her career started in the 80's she began on the radio and made her way to become a BBC news reporter. In the 1990's she then set up her own production company Umbi Films.

This is where Bend It Like Beckham was filmed it helps define a UK film.
The more realistically filmed it is the better the outcome will be at the end of production. These places they used to film would have had to been checked, hazard aware and Recce's would have had to be done for every single location they used. This was so that they get the most out of the location, they are planned but also to help prevent accidents.
Even though they use multiple locations they fit them together to make them look realistic and near to each other even though this isn't in fact true. There are also notes written next to the potential locations this would have been so that all the cast and staff know whats happening and where it is happening. For example its better that everyone knows whats going on so they filming goes better to plan.

By looking at the clips from the film you can tell that it is a multicultural society and this helps represent England. For example not all countries are multicultural. The way other countries is considered important because we want to show that we are strong and the best. This is because there are many stereotypes about Britain being stuck up and proud however we try to brake this stereotype but also showing we're just like any other country we just have a slightly different culture and way of life then the others.
Bend it like beckham was funded by the Lottery and Film Council. They fund films that they think will make their money back on them taking a percentage at the end. This is so that directors can make enough money to then fund their next project. They are potentially funding a new business like the council would help fund any small business given the situation.
According to the above website ..'The film has gone straight to number one in the UK box office charts, taking a total of £2,001,795 from 384 sites with a screen average of £5,213 which puts it high amongst the all time top earning British financed films. Comparable opening weekends include Bean, Shakespeare In Love and The English Patient.'

The digital technology has moved on a lot in recent years. For example the way we market our movies. We can now download/stream films and programmes straight onto our tv's, laptops and consols. Lovefilm and Netflix are a perfect example of this.

You sign up to a subscribtion and then you can download a certain amount of films during a certain time period. However Itunes does things a little differently, for example to download the film onto your itunes, ipad, ipod or iphone. If you have chose to buy this film you can keep the film for as long as you like however if you chose to rent it you get 48 hours in which to finish watching the particular film. If you have put it onto your phone or ipad then it will automatically delete itself after 48 hours. You do however get 30 days in which to begin watching the film. Once you have started watching it you only have 48 hours left. You can however watch it as many times you want in the 48 hours.

In cinema they have slowly started changing the way we view a film from projector to screen. This is so they can achieve a higher quality filming experience. Not only this but the 3D cinema is being introduced. The full screen will achieve a better 3D experience than the projector.

Marketing and promotion.

There are many ways a film can distributed. For example if there is a famous or well known actor/actress they can tell their fans through social networking sites. Thanks to the Internet we can broadcast anything we like using websites, social networking and video linking. Anyone can put videos on Youtube and this is now a common thing to do. It is free and you can share videos all over the world. There is however problems with copyright and so you have to credit the original owner otherwise you could potentially be sued.

Another way they distribute a film promo is on websites which allow you to click on links. These can be moving or sill images/text. Moving things tend to grab more people's attention, this means having links to advertisements is a good idea. There are also posters/leaflets, this is however considered an old fashioned way of advertising. If your advertising for a movie/film you have to hit a very wide audience in order to grab some of your target audience attention. One best way of doing this is TV advertising.

TV advertising is considered one of the best ways of advertising as it hits a large audience. You do however need to ensure that your hitting the right audience for example putting kid toy adverts on during kids programmes. This is so that you don't end up wasting money as TV advertising is one of the most expensive. This means that you have to make sure your advert is hitting your audience in the right way, it also has to go through checks before being aired. If an advert is considered offensive it can be taken off the TV automatically and so they will loose money as they cannot cover their costs.

Tv adverts for films are called 'trailers' i have put in an example of a film trailer in my blog. This is Woman In Black, directed and written by English citizens. It features a well known actor called Daniel Radcliff, he is most famous for his role as Harry Potter.

Furthermore having cast members doing interviews about the movie will create a greater awareness about the film. People that are Daniels fan's may come across and interview and this would make them want to watch the movie. As it has a famous actor in it is likely that the film would do well without all the promo but the more they tell people the more people are potential audiences.

Posters and bill boards are also used for creating awareness of a product. This is a poster for the film The Woman In Black.

Furthermore Daniel has a few fan pages that would tell people about what he's up to and where you can see and support him.

The difference between UK films and hollywood films is scenery, budget and style. According to The Guardian film statisics have dropped dramatically since 2003. This was shown by the amount that were being produced, money being made and profits. The average budget for a UK film is around £500,000 however in hollywood the average budget is $1 million depending on its hope in the media industry.

There are many different film producers/industries out ther for example Hollywood, UK and Bollywood. Hollywood and the UK are very similar. They use the same codes and conventions however the interpretation is very different. There are many similarities in Bollywood and Hollywood however the biggest difference is the amount of music and drama they put in them. For example in hollywood you are more likely to find an action scene where as in bollywood youd find a lot of music and dance. You can also find out a lot about the india culture from the bollywood movies.

Bollywood is mainly based around love and culture whereas Hollywood is about humour, action and current affairs. The different industries must appeal to each other however their biggest sales will be in their own countries. This is because the films will appeal to more of the target audience.

'The number of films being made in Britain has fallen to the lowest level since at least 2003, with those that are being being made on strikingly lower budgets.
The figures appear in the British Film Institute's yearbook, which in 200 pages of tables and trends tells a story that is best described as mixed.
On the consumer side, Britons watch more films across more platforms than ever before, with record receipts of £988m at the box office. But the production side is a grim picture. The number of films made was down from 87 in 2009 to 79 in 2010. Total films made in Britain, including Hollywood productions and co-productions, fell from 150 to 128 last year.
Similarly, overall production spend is down by 22% to £176m. In 2003, the median budget for a British film was £2.9m. That is down to £1.2m and appears to be falling further.
In the first half of 2011, the figures show a continued slump. There were 46 films with budgets of more than £500,000 in production: 20 domestic features, nine inward investment films, and 17 co-productions – the lowest figure since the BFI began taking records in 2003.' '

Here i have embedded 2 romantic film trailors. One is English and the other is American. One thing i noticed about most of these American films is that they have a lot more drama in than the English ones. This is because different audiences have different needs even though it may still appeal to both audiences. Britain is known for its relaxed, elegant and enjoyable lifestyle where as America is all above movement and getting the max outta your life. Even though our lifes might actually be more similar we stereotype and believe this is the way the other act.

Just by looking at the images used we can see One Day features some very oold fashion looking things for example the building, clothing and phone bx. On the other hand in The Lucky One we see more bright colours, laptops and expensive cars being represented. This shows that america is very up to date and modern whereas England like to keep it simple. Not only this but their accents help the audience identify where abouts it was filmed and written without even looking at the background and setting.

The appeal of UK films to the current UK audience.
We have many different needs and wants as a UK audience. For example we want english actors, english writers and we want to be able to recognise our on heratage in the films. By having lots of different genre's we are already appealing to a wide audience of wants. This is because some people will want to watch a romantic film but some people may be more into action adventure films.
There are also a range of different opinions and facts online they can be found here for example.

The main seperation between the UK and america is probably our humour. This is because we have been brought up differently so our humour is different. Some people may find English humour better than americans however it is down to personal preference. For example the americans have canned laughter, whereas we dont use that much in english films and comedies.

This is an example of an american comedy.
The Big Bang Theory.

This is an example of an english comedy.
Gavin and Stacey.

By looking at these two clips i can see a few differences. For example in american comedys they have the laughter in the scenes however in the UK the use of silence is used to be funny as its considered as awkward silence which is found rather funny.

Another major difference between these two shots is that in America they use a TV set to film where as we use real life settings. This means it is more realistic but also they can move around alot. One issue with filming outside is the legal side of things and people in the background looking towards the camera. To english people this will be funnier than americans because we are a very proud country and so we like to say where we are from. In The Big Bang Theory they just say they're in LA.

Furthermore in The Big Bang Theory they have 5 main characters where as in Gavin and stacey they have loads of different characters from different places.

Strength of industry in the world market.

As we can see from the table and pie chart the US hold the majority of the market share making the most money. This is however because their country is massively big in comparision to ours so it is expected that they will sell and make more money than any film from our box office.

These statistics show the market shares of films up untill 2009.
I got these off of http://www.international-television.org/tv_market_data/focus_world_film_market_trends_statistics.html

When doing research i found out that the UK's film industry is constantly growing and doing really well for itself. It is hoped that we will get bigger and better so that we can eventually compete with the USA. There is a wide audience and there are many different needs and audience wants from the world wide industry. This means there is room for us to compete with the USA. By increasing our skills we are creating more competition, this will hopefully lead to better movies.

'The industry has enjoyed significant successes in recent years. UK box office takings reached a record-breaking £944 million last year, and will almost certainly break the £1 billion barrier this year. UK films grossed $2 billion at the box office worldwide.
The BFI’s 54th London Film Festival earlier in the year showcased some of the very best the UK has to offer, from Danny Boyle’s 127 hours to Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech.
This year also saw Stephen Frears’ Tamara Drewe and Nigel Cole’s Made in Dagenham, both great critical successes. Harry Potter 7 has just put in a record opening weekend performance of 18.3m at the box office. This is a record for any British film, and indeed any film ever, in the UK market;
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is being filmed here in the UK - when the first three were not – another sign that the industry is doing extraordinary well. '
